Beyond the Checkbox: Why Gaming Accessibility Needs Standards, Not Afterthoughts
The controller feels familiar in my hands—the same weight, the same button layout I've known since the Sega Genesis days of the early 90s. But the game world before me might as well be locked behind an impenetrable wall. Text too small to read, audio cues that exist only in the developer's imagination, navigation systems that assume I can see every visual marker they've scattered across the screen. Welcome to modern gaming accessibility: all the right words in the marketing copy, none of the substance where it actually matters.
I've been gaming since before most people knew what a LAN party was, huddled in convention center conference rooms playing Quake with friends who didn't care that my vision was getting worse—they cared that I could still nail a rocket launcher shot from across the map. Thirty-plus years of finding ways to make games work, of developing workarounds that shouldn't be necessary, of watching an industry that claims to welcome everyone consistently lock out millions of potential players.
For most of my gaming life, accessibility meant memorizing menu layouts while a patient friend sat beside me, calling out where each option was located. It meant trailing walls in game maps until we found exits, then trying to guess what visual cues we were missing during boss battles. It meant developing what Brandon Cole called "blind tenacity"—an almost stubborn refusal to give up on games that clearly weren't designed for us.
My vision continues to deteriorate, but my desire to play games has never been stronger. Neither has my frustration with an industry that treats accessibility like a checkbox to tick rather than a fundamental design principle. The technology exists to make virtually any game accessible to blind and low-vision players. The knowledge exists—pioneered by advocates like my late friend Brandon Cole, who spent his career proving that accessible games could be just as engaging, just as challenging, and just as profitable as their inaccessible counterparts.
What we lack aren't the tools or the talent. What we lack are standards. Real, enforceable, industry-wide standards that treat accessibility as a baseline requirement rather than a nice-to-have feature for developers feeling generous.
When Developers Actually Listen: The Gold Standard
Let me show you what success looks like. In 2020, Naughty Dog released The Last of Us Part II with what many consider the most comprehensive accessibility suite ever included in a mainstream game. This wasn't an accident, and it wasn't an afterthought. The result came from something revolutionary in the gaming industry: developers who actually listened to blind gamers from the beginning of the development process.
Building upon the foundations we established with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, The Last of Us Part II features more than 60 accessibility settings, with expanded options focused on fine-motor and hearing, as well as completely new features that benefit low-vision and blind players, according to Naughty Dog's official accessibility documentation. But numbers don't tell the real story. The real story is in the details that prove someone who understands blind gaming was in the room when decisions were made.
Navigation That Actually Works
The game's Navigation Assistance isn't just a compass pointing north—it's a comprehensive audio-guided system that can direct you along story paths or help you find specific objectives. When combined with Enhanced Listen Mode, blind players can scan for items and enemies while in listen mode. Send out a scan triggering audio cues at the target's location. The pitch of the sound changes based on the target's height relative to you, according to PlayStation's accessibility documentation.
This is spatial audio design done right. The system doesn't just tell you "there's something over there"—it gives you precise directional information, height awareness, and distance feedback. The difference between being told there's a door somewhere in the room versus being guided directly to the handle.
Combat Audio That Means Something
Traversal and Combat Audio Cues work alongside the game's audio to map easily identifiable sounds to commonly used actions (scavenging pickups, jumping across gaps, dodging incoming melee attacks, etc.) Every critical gameplay action has a distinct audio signature that's been carefully designed to cut through the ambient sound mix. When an enemy is about to attack, you hear it. When there's a climbable ledge, you hear it. When you're low on health, you hear it.
These audio cues enhance the experience for everyone, creating a richer, more immersive soundscape that supports gameplay rather than just decorating it.
The Collaboration That Made It Possible
The technical achievements didn't happen in a vacuum. Morgan Baker explained in her accessibility consulting documentation how the developers at Naughty Dog listened to her and showed a genuine interest in understanding how the studio could make the game more accessible and why accessibility features are important to disabled players. Brandon Cole, among other accessibility consultants, worked directly with the development team throughout the process.
This is the model that works: bringing blind gamers into the development process as consultants and collaborators, not just beta testers checking boxes at the end. "I felt both heard and was able to see my suggestions come to life, which is truly something special. This approach is the future of accessibility, and I hope other developers are paying attention and will consider taking a similar approach," Baker explained in her project documentation.
Learning from Accidental Success
Sometimes accessibility happened by accident, and those accidents taught us what to look for in intentional design. Fable 2's golden breadcrumb trail wasn't specifically designed as an accessibility feature, but it became a lifeline for blind players. That visual trail translated into audio cues that let me navigate the world with confidence I'd never experienced in an RPG before. I spent hundreds of hours in Fable 2 and 3, not because they were perfectly accessible, but because that one navigation system worked so well that it made the entire experience playable.
Similarly, Gears of War 5 became accessible to some blind players through what could be called "accidental accessibility"—features that weren't specifically designed for blind players but happened to provide the audio and tactile feedback we needed. The combination of strong spatial audio, consistent weapon sounds, and reliable cover mechanics meant that dedicated players could develop strategies that worked.
These accidental successes matter because they show what's possible when core game systems are designed with clear, consistent feedback mechanisms. The problem is that accidental accessibility is unreliable—what works in one game might be completely absent in the sequel.
The Technical Reality: What Screen Readers Actually Need
To understand why so many games fail at accessibility, you need to understand what blind gamers actually need from assistive technology integration. Making menus "screen reader compatible" is basic—though even that basic requirement trips up many developers.
Screen Reader Integration Done Right
Diablo 4 demonstrates what comprehensive screen reader support looks like in practice. When turning on the Screen Reader, I could adjust the volume of the voice, the speed, and even different voices entirely, notes Can I Play That's accessibility review. But more importantly, the screen reader doesn't just read menu items—it provides context and spatial information that helps blind players understand their position in the game world.
"I've got to say the fact that the screen reader does read almost everything it needs to in terms of gear and statistics as well as skills and even reading locations on a map, this is definitely the biggest upside to Diablo 4 as far as blind accessibility," reported Reddit user tj_the_blind_gamer. The system integrates with the game's inventory management, skill trees, and map navigation in ways that feel natural rather than bolted-on.
Audio Navigation Systems
Diablo 4's audio navigation assistance, informally called the "sonar" system, lets players place waypoints on the map and follow layered audio cues that guide them to their destination. Instead of overwhelming beeps or harsh tones, this system uses uniquely crafted sound layers to indicate direction and distance, according to Sportskeeda's analysis of the game's accessibility features.
The sophistication here cannot be overstated. These cues become stronger and more precise as players approach their goal, creating an intuitive way to explore Sanctuary without visual assistance. This feature alone has allowed blind gamers to complete the campaign and reach the same milestones as fully sighted players. The map system still has some challenges—quest markers can be difficult to navigate to consistently—but the recent addition of the wayfinder system has significantly improved the experience.
This is what accessible navigation actually looks like—not a simple beeping sound that vaguely indicates direction, but a rich audio environment that provides precise, actionable spatial information.
The Missing Pieces Most Games Ignore
God of War Ragnarök illustrates both the promise and the frustration of modern accessibility implementation. The game includes over 70 accessibility features and comprehensive screen reader support, according to PlayStation's official documentation. But as Ross Minor noted in his blind accessibility review, "on-screen prompts don't seem to be read — such as items gathered. The game menu is also largely unnarrated. This results in skills, armour, weapons, map, goals, and codex information all being unsupported".
These gaps aren't technical limitations—they're design oversights that reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of how blind players interact with games. You can't just make 70% of a game accessible and call it a victory. Every inaccessible menu, every unvoiced prompt, every visual-only puzzle creates a barrier that can stop progress entirely.
The Checkbox Problem: When Good Intentions Fall Short
Hogwarts Legacy represents everything wrong with the current approach to gaming accessibility. On paper, it checks all the boxes: text-to-speech support, colorblind filters, remappable controls, and subtitle customization, according to Warner Bros.' accessibility documentation. But as Brandon Cole discovered when he actually tried to play the game, "the game, however, is still not playable by the totally blind. While it does feature an accessibility menu, and some of the better narration in a game in recent memory, it is lacking in many features that would be necessary to make the game blind playable".
The Navigation Disaster
The game's navigation system perfectly illustrates the difference between accessibility theater and actual accessibility. While Hogwarts Legacy includes a compass feature that provides audio feedback, as one blind player explained on Brandon's blog, "You need to listen very carefully because it is very suttal. The humming sound will be in different directions depending where you are facing. To get to your objective in a quest, you need only to follow this slight humming sound".
This is accessibility designed by people who have never been blind. A subtle humming sound that requires precise listening to distinguish direction is useless in a game filled with ambient noise, music, and sound effects. A solution that works in a quiet testing environment but fails completely in actual gameplay.
The Character Creation Insult
The problems start from the very beginning. Hogwarts Legacy provides a screen reader for menus but then expects players to click and drag elements during character creation. A perfect example of developers not understanding the tools they're claiming to support. You can't provide text-to-speech functionality and then require mouse-based drag-and-drop interactions—the two approaches are fundamentally incompatible.
This kind of oversight reveals the fundamental problem: developers implementing accessibility features without actually testing them with the assistive technologies their target users rely on.
Missing the Point Entirely
The fundamental problem with Hogwarts Legacy's accessibility isn't any single missing feature—it's the approach. The developers implemented accessibility features without understanding how blind players actually interact with games. They focused on making existing systems marginally more accessible rather than designing systems that work for everyone from the ground up.
Most notably those with motor-function impairments. The largest of those barriers is found in the combat, notes Can I Play That's accessibility review. The game's combat system relies heavily on precise timing and visual cues that have no audio equivalent. Puzzles require spatial reasoning based on visual information that's never conveyed through alternative channels. Character progression depends on navigating complex menus that the screen reader only partially supports.
This is what happens when accessibility is treated as a post-production consideration rather than a core design principle. You get features that sound good in marketing copy but don't actually enable gameplay.
Learning from Iterative Success: The Spider-Man Model
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 demonstrates a different approach—launching with solid accessibility foundations and then improving based on community feedback. The game now includes comprehensive accessibility features that were added through post-launch updates, including Audio Descriptions: Enable descriptive narration of in-game cinematics and Screen Reader: The screen reader reads aloud the text on the screen, and provides spoken guidance for navigating the menus. Screen Reader Enabled: Settings Menu, Tutorials, Boot Screen, according to Insomniac's current documentation.
"We're so excited to bring all of these accessibility features and improvements to you – thank you for your patience and support as we prepared for the 1.002 update," said Schaffel. "With our first-ever Screen Reader, we cover not only the settings but the FNSM App and all the Touch Pad menus including comprehensive map, skill tree, tech readouts and more", according to PlayStation's update announcement in March 2024.
This approach—launching with good baseline accessibility and then adding more comprehensive features based on player feedback—shows that developers can iterate toward better accessibility even if they don't get everything right at launch. However, it also highlights a problem: why should blind players have to wait months after launch for basic screen reader functionality? These features should be part of the core development process, not post-launch additions.
The Economic Argument: A Market Being Left Behind
The business case for accessibility standards is overwhelming, yet somehow still not driving change fast enough. A study conducted by casual games studio PopCap games found that an estimated one in five casual video gamers have a physical, mental or developmental disability, according to Wikipedia's comprehensive overview of game accessibility research. That's not a niche market—that's 20% of the gaming audience being systematically excluded from mainstream titles.
The success stories prove that accessibility doesn't limit creativity or profitability. The Last of Us Part II won multiple awards for both its storytelling and its accessibility innovations. Diablo 4 has become a showcase for how accessible design can enhance the experience for all players. Blind gamer and accessibility advocate Tyleniphe made history by becoming the first sightless player to take down Uber Lilith in Diablo 4. Using nothing but sound cues, screen reader feedback, and sheer determination, Tyleniphe proved that endgame content isn't off-limits to anyone — as long as the tools are there to support them.
When games are truly accessible, blind players don't just participate—they excel. But this only happens when developers commit to accessibility as a core design principle rather than an afterthought.
The Standards We Need
The gaming industry has guidelines—multiple sets of them, in fact. In 2012, a group of games studios, specialists and academics came together to create the Game Accessibility Guidelines which won the FCC's Chairman's award for Advancement in Accessibility. Microsoft has published comprehensive Xbox Accessibility Guidelines developed in partnership with industry experts and members of the Gaming & Disability Community. The International Game Developers Association maintains extensive resources for accessible game development.
So why do we still get games like Hogwarts Legacy? Because guidelines without enforcement are just suggestions, and the gaming industry has proven it won't police itself on accessibility.
Current Legal Framework
In the US, the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010 (CVAA) brought up-to-date accessibility guidelines to advanced communication services (ACS), which is considered to include video games with communication elements including text and voice chat and the user interface (UI) elements to reach the chats. However, the CVAA does not require you to make your games fully accessible. While AbleGamers would love for you to make your games and content fully accessible so that players with disabilities all over the world can enjoy the amazing worlds, and stories you create for a living, the CVAA has a very narrow focus, according to AbleGamers' analysis of the law.
The Federal Communications Commission granted a final waiver that expired on December 31, 2018, making all video games developed and released after January 1, 2019, expected to be compliant with the CVAA. But enforcement has been inconsistent, and the scope is limited to communication features rather than core gameplay.
Industry Self-Regulation Attempts
The Entertainment Software Association announced its Accessibility Games Initiative along with its partners EA, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo of America, and Ubisoft, in March 2025. The Initiative is designed to provide 24 tags that can be used on physical or digital product labelling to indicate a game's features that address accessibility, such as have narrated menus or joystick inversion controls.
While this labeling system helps players identify accessible games, it's still voluntary. There's no requirement for developers to actually implement accessible features—just to accurately label what they've chosen to include.
Baseline Technical Requirements
Real accessibility standards need to establish non-negotiable technical baselines:
Screen Reader Integration: Every menu, every text element, every interactive object must be fully accessible to NVDA, JAWS, and other assistive technologies. This is a design discipline issue, not a technical challenge.
Audio Description Systems: For any game with cutscenes, quick-time events, or visual storytelling elements, audio descriptions should be a standard feature, not an experimental add-on.
Spatial Audio Navigation: Any game requiring navigation through 3D space needs comprehensive audio waypoint systems. The technology exists—Diablo 4 and The Last of Us Part II have proven it works.
Alternative Input Methods: Full control remapping should be standard, not an accessibility accommodation. If a game requires button combinations, rapid button presses, or precise timing, alternative input methods must be available.
Process Requirements
Technical standards aren't enough. We need process standards that ensure accessibility is considered from the beginning of development:
Accessibility Consultants: Any game with a budget over $10 million should be required to work with accessibility consultants who represent the communities being served. Not at the end of development, not for a quick review, but throughout the entire process.
Testing Requirements: Accessibility testing should be as rigorous and ongoing as any other quality assurance process. You don't ship a game without testing whether it runs properly—you shouldn't ship a game without testing whether it's accessible.
Documentation Standards: Every game should include comprehensive accessibility documentation that clearly states what features are supported and how they work. Players shouldn't have to guess whether a game will be playable for them.
The Collaboration Model That Works
At its most basic, accessibility consulting is work that I do as an outside freelance contributor, helping game developers, publishers, and studios to understand how they can make their games more playable by a wide range of disabled gamers, explains Laura Dale in her comprehensive overview of video game accessibility consulting. But the most successful projects go far beyond basic consulting—they involve genuine collaboration throughout the development process.
Early Integration
"Brandon, for example, shared how we could transform a platforming game into a sound-based game, with pitch for the height of the jump, and how far you are from the next platform. For shooting games, you could also have another kind of sound-based game, like orienting yourself toward the enemy based on the sound of the enemy, and locking the vertical axis, because this is the most difficult for blind players to re-orient", according to Ubisoft's David Tisserand in an interview about the company's accessibility consulting process.
This is what collaboration looks like—not just asking "how do we make this accessible?" but asking "how do we design this so it works for everyone?" The solutions often make games better for all players, not just those with disabilities.
The Human Cost of Getting It Wrong
"After my accident, I got into this spiral of depression. I didn't think I was gonna snap out of it. I thought gaming just wasn't an option anymore", says accessibility consultant Paul Lane in Sony Interactive Entertainment's spotlight on accessibility consulting. This is the reality behind the statistics—real people being cut off from communities, hobbies, and forms of entertainment that were central to their lives.
When we get accessibility right, we don't just enable gameplay—we preserve connections, maintain communities, and ensure that acquiring a disability doesn't mean losing access to the digital worlds that have become increasingly central to modern culture.
Beyond Good Intentions: A Call for Enforcement
The voluntary approach to gaming accessibility has produced some remarkable successes, but enabled systematic exclusion to continue unchecked. Starting off simple, addressing a complaint I've seen for years within the video game industry from disabled and non disabled players alike, the video game industry should be standardising minimum text sizes in video games, with customisation options for both in game text and subtitle text, to ensure that all in game text is legible on a first boot of a game, argues Access-Ability's comprehensive analysis of needed industry standards.
This shouldn't be a revolutionary concept. Minimum text size standards, screen reader compatibility, basic audio cues—these are not technical impossibilities. They're basic accessibility requirements that should be as standard as stable frame rates and bug-free gameplay.
The Path Forward
If a game developer or publisher is able to afford millions of dollars in marketing spending, they should probably be expected to hit the standards discussed in this video, argues Access-Ability's analysis of accessibility standards in 2024. The resources exist. The knowledge exists. The technology exists. What we need now is the will to make accessibility a non-negotiable requirement rather than a nice-to-have feature.
The gaming industry has shown it can innovate rapidly when motivated. We've seen photorealistic graphics, complex physics simulations, and online worlds supporting millions of concurrent players. Accessible design is not a more complex technical challenge than any of these achievements.
Carrying the Torch Forward
Brandon Cole used to say that accessibility wasn't about charity or accommodation—it was about good design that benefits everyone. He was right. The audio cues that help blind players navigate also help sighted players in noisy environments. The clear interface designs that work with screen readers also improve usability for everyone. The flexible control schemes that accommodate different disabilities also give all players more options to play comfortably.
"I have found my true direction, and my true purpose. And yes, it's video games. Specifically, video game accessibility", Brandon wrote in what would become one of his final articles about his work in the industry. "I want to continue helping game developers bring new experiences to the blind community, and in doing so, maybe I'll manage to affect the worlds of many others".
But we're still fighting for basic recognition that accessibility is a design requirement, not a design constraint. We're still explaining why blind gamers deserve the same access to digital entertainment that sighted gamers take for granted. We're still watching games launch with accessibility features that were clearly designed by people who have never actually tried to use them.
This has to change. Not because it's the nice thing to do, but because it's the right thing to do. Because gaming is for everyone, and "everyone" includes the millions of players who are currently being locked out by preventable design choices.
The technology exists. The knowledge exists. The economic incentive exists. What we need now are standards with teeth, enforcement mechanisms that matter, and an industry-wide commitment to treating accessibility as a fundamental design principle rather than an afterthought.
I've been gaming for over three decades, and my vision continues to deteriorate. But I refuse to accept that my future in gaming should depend on the charity of individual developers or the occasional breakthrough title. The blind gaming community deserves better. The industry can do better. And with the right standards and enforcement mechanisms, it will do better.
The question isn't whether accessible gaming design is possible—games like The Last of Us Part II and Diablo 4 have already proven it is. The question is whether we'll continue to accept an industry where accessibility is optional, or whether we'll finally demand the standards that make it universal.
Brandon would have wanted us to keep fighting for that universal access. This article is part of that fight, and I'll be one of the ones who keeps carrying the torch until every game is designed for every player from day one. The technology is ready. The community is ready. Now the industry needs to catch up.
