Zeltron

The species is introduced through Damika and her young daughter Tammea, the two Zeltrons who hire the crew off the colony world. Zeltrons are pink-skinned empaths from the world Zeltros. They read the emotions of those around them and emit pheromones that can induce euphoria and calm in others; Quinel experiences this pheromone effect firsthand as a wave of easing warmth.

Their empathy is a physical trait as much as an emotional one. Negative emotions are actively harmful to them, and under sustained fear and violence a Zeltron's skin visibly darkens with stress, deepening from pink toward red and violet. Pushed far enough, they can approach what Damika calls an "empathic shutdown." During the escape from Ghauba, Damika carries Tammea one-armed while fighting and moves with what the narration calls inhuman speed, though the story leaves open whether this owes to Zeltron biology or a mother's desperate strength. Dez notes that Zeltron culture normalizes polyamorous relationships. The emotions Quinel receives from Damika also convey that Zeltrons need stimulation, community, joy, art, music, and laughter to be well, and that a life on the run is no life for a Zeltron child.

Garaath provides fuller exposition on Zeltron biology. Zeltrons do not merely sense emotions but feel everyone's emotions several times more intensely than the source does, experiencing them as their own; in crowds and around strong feeling this becomes overwhelming. They can also project their emotions onto others, making people feel what they feel, usually unconsciously and especially in children, with their pheromones amplifying the effect to create trust, comfort, and euphoria. When stressed, exhausted, or traumatized, a Zeltron loses control and broadcasts everything they are feeling uncontrollably. Garaath stresses that Zeltrons need joy and positive emotion "like we need air and water," and that prolonged negativity actively damages them.

The deliberate projection of emotion onto others is framed as the deepest taboo among Zeltrons: those who manipulate others this way can be exiled from their society. Tammea's uncontrolled broadcasting during her grief is depicted as a shameful violation of this principle, even though she cannot stop it.

A coping method surfaces: a centering technique in which a Zeltron finds their own center, feels their own heartbeat, and lets others' feelings "wash past you like water around stone." Tammea learned it from her mother. It requires calm and focus, and on the emotionally chaotic streets of Nar Shaddaa she cannot make it hold. The technique and the species' wellbeing are associated with the gentle rhythms of Zeltros, contrasted against the harsh sensory assault of a crime-ridden moon.
