Quinel Neviden

Character · also known as Quinel

A weathered human man with dark hair and stubble, wearing a worn dark jacket over a black shirt with a blaster pistol holstered at his hip, standing with a faint smile in the dim cockpit of a starship.

Quinel Neviden is a human freighter captain from Corellia, owner of the Misfit Stray, who prides himself on running a clean ship.

Appearance

A human male, originally from Corellia. Because the story is told largely from his own point of view, the chapters give little direct physical description of him. What is shown is a rough-around-the-edges spacer: he goes about with stubble on his face, favors a coat (his old friend Garaath ribs him for "worse taste in coats"). Garaath teasingly sums up his look as "too scruffy." After the events on Ghauba he carries a DL-44 heavy blaster pistol at his hip, worn under the coat; earlier he had been in the habit of leaving it stowed aboard ship.

Personality

Outwardly easygoing and quick with a jovial greeting or a wry quip, Quinel keeps up a steady banter with his droid Dezmyn and rarely lets nerves show, staying level-voiced even with stormtroopers' blasters in his face. He takes real pride in running a clean ship, holding firm rules against contraband and people-smuggling to keep Imperial attention off himself, and frames himself as a realist rather than an optimist. Underneath that, he is far softer than he admits: he breaks his own rules for a scared child, walks into a war zone rather than abandon people he gave his word to, and is fiercely loyal to a promise once made. Dez needles him that he is "a better person than you want to admit to being." He is self-deprecating, often calling his own choices stupid, and carries a world-weary, cynical read on the Empire and the times. He loves his ship deeply, and he grows protective and quietly paternal toward Tammea, mentoring her in the ship's systems. He is also plainly haunted, sleeping poorly and drinking to blunt memories of past failures he does not like to dwell on.

Arc 1 — Escape from Ghauba

Quinel Neviden is introduced as the human captain and owner of the freighter the Misfit Stray, a Corellian who has painted his ship blue and purple and keeps her deliberately clean: he refuses to smuggle people — chiefly to avoid drawing Imperial attention — and takes on no contraband if he can help it. He works alongside his droid partner Dezmyn. In a cantina on the colony world of Ghauba, a hooded family — the Zeltron woman Damika, her partner Deklaen, and their young daughter Tammea — approach him for passage off-world, having been directed to him by the dock mechanic Kybuss. He turns them down at first, then relents against his own better judgment, charging far less than they offered (15,000 rather than 60,000), swayed by the girl's delight in his ship.

When the Empire descends on Ghauba hunting the two wanted slicers, Quinel goes back into the city to find the family rather than simply flee. The chapters establish him as a former Clone Wars blockade runner burdened by old guilt. He is haunted by the Siege of Felucia, where he failed to save a Bothan child, and by fragmentary memories of his own past, including a bloodied figure in a Corellian back alley telling him to leave. He recalls witnessing the "supposed Jedi coup" firsthand while being held for questioning aboard a Republic frigate, and privately doubts the official story. Because he left his blaster aboard the Stray, he repeatedly regrets going unarmed as the crackdown turns into a massacre.

He reaches the family in the town hall, and Damika, using her empathic touch, extracts his promise to protect Tammea if anything happens to them. Both parents are killed during the escape through a hangar ambush; Damika sacrifices herself with a thermal detonator to blast open an escape route for the ship. Quinel gets Tammea aboard, survives the Empire's orbital bombardment of the planet, and takes the orphaned girl on as crew, keeping his promise to her mother. He sets course for Cloud City on Bespin to find his old contact Garaath.

Arc 2 — Cloud City Blues

On Cloud City, Quinel leans on his old friend Garaath for shelter, ship repairs, and work. This arc fills in that he grew up alone on the streets of Corellia, with little childhood to speak of, with only a speeder-bike gang for company, and that Garaath has been pulling him out of scrapes since before the Clone Wars, longer than anyone else in his life. Having learned his lesson on Ghauba, he now carries a DL-44 blaster.

Much of the arc follows his struggle to care for a traumatized empath child. Through Garaath he learns that his own grief and anxiety actively harm Tammea empathically, and that overwhelmed Zeltrons broadcast their emotions uncontrollably. After a marketplace outing triggers a breakdown that nearly gets Tammea killed, he stays with her through a projection-fueled crisis in their lent apartment, absorbing her panic and grief. When she desperately offers him the credit chip her mother left her so that he will not abandon her, he refuses it and instead tells her "you're crew" — the same words he once gave Dez. His memories of Felucia return in fuller detail here: the refugee camp, the three-month Separatist blockade, the biological agent, and Illa. Coming to genuinely want the girl aboard rather than merely honoring an obligation, he converts an old storage room on the Stray into permanent quarters for her. He then accepts a transport job Garaath lines up, with pickup on Nar Shaddaa, though Garaath warns him the client seemed nervous and "off."

Arc 3 — Crossfire Run

By this arc Quinel has owned the Stray for about eleven or twelve years, having — by his own account — "liberated" her from someone who "didn't deserve her." He mentors Tammea in the ship's systems and cheerfully lets her take over the galley, being a notoriously poor cook himself. In his cabin he keeps a preserved blue-and-purple Felucian wildflower whose personal significance is left unexplained.

On Nar Shaddaa, he reluctantly accepts what is pitched as an "exotic spices" run for an unnamed, well-dressed handler, suspecting from the secrecy and the oversized payment that it is really a criminal-syndicate job but feeling unable to walk away without being blacklisted or worse. When the heavy sealed crates are loaded aboard, he glimpses a Black Sun tattoo on one of the loading crew and realizes the crew is trapped in a Black Sun contract — a syndicate anomalously operating inside Hutt territory — bound for Taris. Taris proves to be tied to a traumatic chapter of his own past: as a desperate, barely-eighteen-year-old he was hunted through the world's lower city by bounty hunters, and he swore he would never go back. The reason he was hunted is not explained on the page. Committed to the job with no clean way out, he resolves to make the delivery, collect the second half of the payment, and get his crew clear of the whole mess.
