Black Sun

Black Sun is introduced first without a name. In a Nar Shaddaa cantina, Quinel and his crew meet a well-dressed, cultured human contact flanked by hired security. The man declines to identify who he works for, saying only that the crew "now work for us" and that he represents "some very, very powerful friends" the crew would not want as enemies. He hires them to transport a shipment labeled "exotic spices" to a destination withheld until the cargo is aboard, offering payment far larger than the labeled goods would justify. He refuses to answer questions and makes clear that declining means blacklisting the crew's reputation, and that he does not bluff.

The syndicate is named only in the following chapter. As enforcers load six heavy, industrially sealed crates aboard the Misfit Stray, Quinel glimpses a distinctive black sun tattoo on one loader's neck and recognizes it as the mark of Black Sun. He and Dezmyn describe the organization as a criminal syndicate second only to the Hutts in power and reach, specializing in spice trafficking, weapons dealing, assassination, and extortion, operating with corporate efficiency and resources Dez likens to a planetary army.

Black Sun's terms are absolute: the delivery is bound for Taris under a strict deadline with no detours and no backing out. Quinel and Dez note that a contractor who reneges becomes a liability to be eliminated, with Dez calculating their survival odds at under 15 percent if they try to return the cargo. After the cantina meeting, two professional tails shadow the crew back to the spaceport and break off only once they pass the docking perimeter; their identity is left unconfirmed, and the story does not tie them to Black Sun. Black Sun's presence on Nar Shaddaa is treated as an anomaly, since the moon is Hutt territory and the Cartel does not tolerate rival syndicates operating in its space — a contradiction the crew notes but cannot yet explain.
